Inclusion Capital: How Police Officers Are Included in Their Workplaces

Policing organisations are increasingly expected to be representative of the diversity (e.g., gender, sexuality, ethnicity and religion) in communities they serve. However, inclusion these officers workplace often requires them fit into prevailing police culture, meaning that cultural changes association with increased not achieved as readily organisations. Drawing upon semi-structured interviews twenty detectives, this article, I assert there three core characteristics required needed promote acceptance their workplace, regardless status. These congruence, competence team-player ability—together known ‘inclusion capital’. The definitions capital shaped by culture organisational policy subject change. An individual officer’s understanding ability prove reflected how well included accepted amongst colleagues.
